I started working at Everett Transmission the day I turned sixteen in 1974. I started as a remover and installer of transmissions. Soon I got involved in the tear down procedures and then the rebuilding of the units. I personally have rebuilt over 20,000 transmissions. I have been the owner of Everett Transmission since 1994. Transmissions are not a job to me, they have been in my life day and night for 42 years. My hobbies revolve mostly around mechanical things such as motorcycles, go fast boats, ski mobiles, dirt bikes, Corvettes, and Porsches.

Your vehicle's transmission fluid plays a critical role in ensuring smooth gear shifts, preventing overheating, and keeping internal components lubricated. When this fluid becomes contaminated, it can lead to a range of transmission issues. Keeping an eye out for signs of contaminated transmission fluid can save you from costly repairs. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, we can expertly handle problems related to transmission fluid. Here are five signs that your transmission fluid is contaminated. Dark or Dirty Fluid Transmission fluid should typically be a bright red color. But as the fluid collects contaminants, it can become dark brown to black. This discoloration indicates that the fluid is no longer effectively lubricating and protecting the transmission components. If you notice your fluid has turned dark or murky, it's time for replacement. Burnt Smell If you detect a burnt smell coming from the fluid, this is a warning sign. The smell could be a result of overheating, which breaks down the fluid's protective properties. Burnt fluid not only reduces your transmission's performance, but also increases the risk of serious damage. Slipping Gears If your vehicle is having trouble staying in gear or slipping between gears, contaminated transmission fluid could be the culprit. When fluid becomes dirty or filled with debris, it can't generate the proper hydraulic pressure needed for smooth gear engagement. This can cause the transmission to slip, resulting in unpredictable gear shifts. Delayed or Harsh Shifting Contaminated transmission fluid can cause delayed or rough shifting. If you experience hesitation when your vehicle shifts gears or notice a hard or jerky motion during shifting, this could be due to debris affecting the fluid's ability to circulate smoothly. Clean, well-maintained transmission fluid is crucial for seamless gear changes. Unusual Noises If you hear grinding, whining, or clunking noises when your transmission is shifting gears, contaminated fluid could be to blame. These noises often indicate that debris in the fluid is making it difficult for components to operate properly. Ignoring these sounds could lead to severe transmission damage, so it's essential to address the issue promptly. Your vehicle’s cooling system plays a vital role in keeping your engine at a safe operating temperature. When the system is functioning properly, it prevents overheating and serious engine damage. However, if there’s a coolant leak, your engine could be at risk. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, our local mechanics provide expert coolant leak detection and repair. Here are five signs that your car might have a coolant leak. Visible Coolant Puddles Under Your Vehicle One of the most obvious signs of a coolant leak is the presence of a brightly colored puddle beneath your car. Coolant commonly comes in hues including green, orange, and pink, and if you see it accumulating underneath your vehicle, it's an indication that your coolant is escaping. Ignoring this issue can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. Engine Overheating If your engine temperature gauge is higher than normal, you might have a coolant leak. When there isn't enough coolant circulating through the system, the engine won't be properly cooled, causing the temperature to rise. Addressing overheating issues quickly can help prevent expensive engine repairs. Low Coolant Levels Regularly checking your coolant levels is a simple yet important maintenance task. If you notice that your coolant is consistently low despite regular top-ups, a leak may be the culprit. To stay safe, remember to only check/add coolant when the engine is cool. Sweet Smell from Your Engine Bay Coolant contains ethylene glycol, which has a distinctively sweet smell. If you detect this odor coming from your engine bay, particularly after driving, there’s a strong possibility that your cooling system is leaking. Steam or Smoke from the Hood If you see steam or smoke rising from under your hood, it’s a major warning sign of a coolant leak. The steam indicates that coolant is leaking onto a hot engine surface, causing it to vaporize. If this happens, it's crucial to pull over to a safe location and shut off your engine. Then you should contact the mechanic about conducting an inspection. As soon as you notice that your car is struggling to start, it’s best to get to the shop. Otherwise, the underlying problem could soon get worse and prevent your car from starting at all, leaving you stranded. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and fixing issues that prevent cars from firing up. Here’s a look at four common causes of no-start. Dead Battery A dead battery is a frequent culprit when a car won't start. The battery provides the electrical power necessary to start the engine and operate various components like lights and the radio. Batteries can die for several reasons, including leaving lights on overnight, having an old battery that has reached the end of its lifespan, or experiencing extreme temperatures that affect battery performance. Faulty Starter Motor The starter motor is responsible for cranking the engine when you turn the key. If the starter motor is faulty, you might hear a clicking sound but the engine won't turn over. A bad starter motor may also result in a grinding noise. Fuel System Issues Problems with the fuel system also often prevent the engine from starting. Common fuel system issues include an empty gas tank, a clogged fuel filter, or a failing fuel pump. Signs of a faulty fuel pump include sputtering, decreased gas mileage, and a whining noise coming from the fuel tank area. Bad Alternator The alternator charges the battery while the engine is running and powers the electrical system. If the alternator is bad, the battery will not charge properly, leading to a dead battery and a car that won't start. Symptoms of a failing alternator include dimming headlights, a battery warning light on the dashboard, and electrical accessory issues. Replacing a bad alternator is essential to keep the battery charged and the car running smoothly.
