I started working at Everett Transmission the day I turned sixteen in 1974. I started as a remover and installer of transmissions. Soon I got involved in the tear down procedures and then the rebuilding of the units. I personally have rebuilt over 20,000 transmissions. I have been the owner of Everett Transmission since 1994. Transmissions are not a job to me, they have been in my life day and night for 42 years. My hobbies revolve mostly around mechanical things such as motorcycles, go fast boats, ski mobiles, dirt bikes, Corvettes, and Porsches.

Your vehicle's alternator is responsible for keeping the battery charged and powering essential electrical components while the engine is running. When the alternator starts to fail, it can cause a range of issues that may leave you stranded if not addressed promptly. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, we provide expert alternator replacement and auto electric repair in the greater Everett, MA area. Here are five common signs of an alternator problem. Dead or Weak Battery While a dead battery is often attributed to the battery itself, a failing alternator can also be the culprit. If the alternator isn't charging the battery properly, the battery will eventually drain and fail to start the vehicle. If you've replaced the battery recently and it's still losing charge, the alternator could be the root cause. Dim or Flickering Lights One of the most noticeable signs of a failing alternator is dim or flickering headlights and interior lights. The alternator provides power to the vehicle's lighting system, and when it starts to fail, it can't deliver a consistent power supply. This is a clear indication that your alternator may not be functioning properly. Warning Light on the Dashboard Modern vehicles are equipped with a dashboard warning light that signals alternator issues. This light typically appears as a battery icon or reads ALT or GEN. If this light illuminates, it’s a warning sign that the alternator isn't charging the battery correctly. Ignoring this light could result in a dead battery and a stranded vehicle. Malfunctioning Electrical Accessories When an alternator begins to fail, it can cause electrical components to malfunction. You might experience power windows operating slower than usual, the radio cutting out, or the air conditioning not functioning properly. These electrical failures occur because the alternator isn't supplying sufficient power to these systems. Strange Noises A failing alternator can produce unusual noises, such as grinding or whining sounds. These noises are often caused by a worn-out bearing or a faulty belt. If you hear any strange sounds coming from the alternator area, it's important to have it inspected by the mechanic as soon as possible. Your car’s suspension system plays a critical role in ensuring a smooth and safe ride. It absorbs shocks from the road, maintains proper tire contact, and provides stability during turns. When the suspension system starts to fail, your vehicle’s performance and safety can be compromised. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, we provide expert suspension repair in the greater Everett, MA area. Here are six signs of a suspension problem. Bumpy or Uncomfortable Ride One of the most noticeable symptoms of a failing suspension system is an unusually rough ride. If you feel every bump and pothole in the road, your shock absorbers or struts may be worn out. These components are designed to dampen road vibrations, and when they fail, your car struggles to maintain a smooth ride. Drifting or Pulling While Turning If your car drifts or pulls to one side during turns, it could be due to a problem with your suspension. A failing suspension system struggles to keep the vehicle stable, increasing the risk of losing control. Uneven Tire Wear Take a close look at your tires. If you notice uneven tread wear, it could indicate a suspension problem. A failing suspension can cause uneven pressure distribution on the tires, leading to accelerated wear on certain areas. This issue not only damages your tires, but can also compromise traction and safety. Nose Diving When Braking It’s a red flag if your car’s front end dips dramatically when you hit the brakes. This behavior, known as nose diving, often points to worn-out shocks or struts. These components help maintain stability during braking, and when they fail, stopping distances can increase, putting you at greater risk of an accident. Fluid Leaks Shocks/struts rely on hydraulic fluid to function properly, and leaks indicate they are no longer effective. If your suspension is leaking fluid, it needs to be addressed ASAP. Excessive Bouncing A quick test for suspension health is the bounce test. Push down firmly on the hood of your car and release it, then go to the rear and do the same thing. If the vehicle bounces more than 2-3 times after you let go, your suspension system may need attention. Excessive bouncing indicates that the suspension parts aren’t adequately absorbing impacts. Brake problems can quickly escalate into dangerous situations if not addressed promptly. Being aware of the early signs of brake trouble can help you prevent costly repairs and, most importantly, avoid accidents. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, we provide expert brake repair in the greater Everett, MA area. Here are five common signs of brake trouble. Squeaking or Squealing Noises One of the most noticeable signs of brake trouble is a high-pitched squeaking or squealing noise when you apply the brakes. This sound often indicates that the brake pads have worn down and need to be replaced. Many brake pads have built-in wear indicators designed to make noise when they get too thin. Ignoring this sound can lead to more severe damage. Grinding Sound When Braking A grinding noise when you apply the brakes is a more serious issue and indicates that the brake pads are completely worn out. When this happens, metal parts are grinding against each other, potentially causing significant damage to these components. At this stage, the braking system's effectiveness is greatly reduced, and continued driving can cause more expensive damage. Brake Pedal Feels Soft or Spongy If your brake pedal feels soft or spongy when you press down on it, there’s a good chance you have a problem with your brake fluid. This could be due to a leak in the brake lines or air entering the brake lines. With a brake fluid leak, you’ve got a major safety issue and should get towed to the shop instead of driving to it. Car Pulls to One Side When Braking When your vehicle pulls to one side as you brake, it could indicate a stuck caliper. This pulling effect is dangerous, especially at higher speeds. Any sign of pulling during braking should be brought to the mechanic’s attention ASAP. Vibration When Braking Feeling vibrations or pulsations through the brake pedal when applying the brakes can be a sign that your brake rotors are warped. Warping commonly occurs from excessive heat. Warped rotors can lead to uneven contact between braking system components, resulting in vibrations.
