Maintenance Tips for a Healthy Engine

As you go about your day-to-day driving routine, there are some simple maintenance tasks that will help you keep your engine in healthy shape. These tasks can be completed quickly and affordably at the shop. At Everett Transmission & Auto Repair, we provide expert auto maintenance in the greater Everett, MA area.

Simple Engine Maintenance Tasks

It’s very important to always stay up to date with oil changes. Conventional oil generally needs to be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, while you can go significantly longer before changing synthetic oil. Regular oil changes help to ensure that your engine’s moving parts stay properly lubricated and protected from major damage. During a full-service oil change, your oil filter will be replaced, allowing clean oil to freely circulate.

For optimal performance and engine health, air and fuel filters need to be replaced at the appropriate mileage intervals. Air filters should be changed every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. This will allow your engine to properly breathe. When air flow is constricted, fuel may not completely burn, which can lead to a drop in gas mileage and an uptick in emissions. Fuel filters should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles to help prevent dirt/debris from getting into your engine.

From time to time, you’ll want to take a look at your engine’s belts. If you see that a belt is cracking or otherwise worn-down, it’ll be best to bring it to a mechanic’s attention. Depending on the particular vehicle, timing belts usually need to be replaced at some point between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. When a timing belt isn’t replaced as needed, it could break and cause major engine problems.

It’s also a good idea to periodically check the ground where your car is regularly parked and see if there is any evidence of leaking fluids. Engine oil can be identified by its dark color and rainbow sheen. Transmission fluid typically has a reddish color. Coolant is known for its bright color, which is often green, but yours could be another color like pink or yellow.
